What’s the Difference between an Interior Designer and an Interior Decorator? 🤔
Many people think the terms interior designer and interior decorator are interchangeable. They are not. Each plays a different role in the home or office remodeling process.
An interior decorator is involved with rearranging a space within a building or home (for example, taking down walls, adding beams, etc.). They work with architects to make sure that any changes will be structurally sound, to obtain needed permits, etc.
In contrast, an interior decorator focuses solely on improving the look of the space once the structural changes have been made. So a decorator can help select paint color for walls, select and arrange furniture, select hardware, window treatments, and more.
Some interior designers do interior decorating also, but many employ the assistance of an interior decorator to stage rooms for open houses or photo shoots. Some interior decorators not only decorate for staging, but they also decorate spaces for the holidays, event spaces, and tv/film set design as well.
